And Men Don’t
Over lunch today, we spoke about Kate and William, how beautiful she is, how much hair he has left, how we are going to get together to watch the wedding (a TIVO’d version), and about why women can talk about this ad nauseum and men don’t really seem to care.
We also spoke about the benefits of her position and the sacrifices she is going to have to make. We discussed how some women were made for this and some are not. After all, her life will have no privacy. She is marrying a life of eternal wealth and social obligation, greater than even our First Ladies (at least they don’t have a life term). There was no real envy for her position.
So, why do we talk about this so much and obsess over this? Maybe because this is as close as we get to a real life fairly tale. The prince marries a “common” woman (and she isn’t so common), a woman who, at 28, has defined herself and proven herself as a woman before walking down the aisle. As a couple, they look so much more solid than Diana and Charles. And we all hope for their “Happily Ever After,” and with it, imagine our own.
Any thoughts to share? Do you envy her?

I suspect you’re right about why women are more likely to obsess about this..what you don’t elaborate on is why this fairy tale would appeal more to women than men.
I also have to confess that I am bored silly by the royal wedding…will not be watching any version of it (Tivo, YouTube or otherwise), so I’m not sure what that says about me
Nancy,
I don’t think that men find the whole wedding thing all that interesting, period. Ever seen a wedding magazine geared towards men? I think that I am interested in it more because I have such memories of Diana’s wedding to Charles. I am not a tabloid person obsessed with stars at all. So the fact that I am paying attention to this (but not reading everything I can get my hands on) does say something. Plus, you may be bored silly, but you left a comment on the site about it, so there’s something in that…

I think women obsess over this fairy tale wedding because it “seems” to be the perfect life. But it’s like you said her life will always be an open book and the expectations of her (from the public) will be enormous and often unrealistic. Do I envy her? Absolutely not.
While a lot of people are pumped about the wedding, I want to see where they will be 5-10 years from now. Afterall, it’s not the day, but the lifetime committment of marriage covenant that they are obligating themselves to.
I am over it too. I mean, I wish the two of them the best and wish for a long, happy life for them both. I would hate to live their life in the public eye though.
But all power to those who want to watch. It will be a spectacle to be sure!
Tiffany,
I’m with you. Let’s hope that 5 years out, they are relatively happy. Maybe they should read both of our blog!!!

Here’s a quote:
“We dream of the perfect wave, the perfect job, the perfect house, the perfect love…and when we get there we dream of something else.” Rob Machado
I have to be careful here…being a man…but as I age, I look at the generation of fathers before me, baby-boomers who had it all only to find out in the end they worked too hard, too long and didn’t enjoy enough of the truly golden years, the years with their family, with their beautiful wives and their children (us) growing into the people we are today. Maybe while our wives want more – a bigger house, a nicer car, another vacation – we have seen it and would rather ‘have’ less and live more.
My daughter is a princess…just ask her. I know because I spend 4 days a week with my children.

Taylor,
Lovely thought. She is a princess because you treat her as one, with your time, the best gift ever!
