Pure Romance: the Who, What, and How
Have you ever wondered what happens at those parties where women get together and learn about all sorts of toys and other, shall we say, enhancers? I have. I mean, I’ve attended a lingerie party, but this is different.
Meanwhile, over the past year, I have connected with Pam Loveland (no, that is not her stage name or her anonymous name), and I asked her if I could interview her about the parties she gives. There is too much information, so we’ve divided her interview into 2 days. On day 3, we interview one of the husbands to find out exactly what is going on in his mind while his wife is busy with her girlfriends.
1. Who normally puts on Pure Romance parties and why?
I have a wide range of customers and have done parties in everything from trailers to huge, very expensive homes. Women in the late 20′s to mid-40′s tend to be the more common age-bracket. I’ve done a lot of parties for mom and lady groups from such sites as Meetup as well. The younger crowd, for me, tends to be more college sorority or bachelorette-type parties. The area you do parties in makes some difference in the types of bookings you get, too.
2. How often do you have repeat customers vs. new ones?
I get a lot of repeat customers or girls who were at one of my hostess’s parties then want to do one themselves. Most of us can track a good deal of our parties back through previous parties. Word-of-mouth is our best advertisement because women are very often surprised at how comfortable and fun the party is, then they want to share it with their friends. I hear all the time about how they were talking about it at work later and how the ladies there were sorry they didn’t make it so they’ll have another party for them. Some book annual or even semi-annual parties for when the new products come out twice-a-year. They want to be able to see the new things and get them for free by hosting.
3. How does the evening work?
We start out by doing a game that’s meant to break-the-ice. I will talk to the hostess at some point beforehand to see what types of games she’d like to do, the more wild variety like Pass the Penis, or something a little milder, like Dream Vacation. I also will watch the ladies as they come in and get a feel of the mood. I can generally tell what kind of crowd I will have and whether I’m going to need to step it up a notch or tone down. For instance, I did a brunch party for a women’s church group one Saturday morning which is of course going to be totally different than a Saturday night bachelorette party.
After a game or two, I talk about some of the products in the catalog. It’s a very interactive show where I explain what everything is and how it’s used while everyone tastes, smells and touches things. We start at beauty, bath and foreplay items then work our way through the different types of toys. There is a lot of educational information and fun tips given throughout. I hear most often women telling me how much they learned and how much more comfortable it was than they expected.
At the end the ladies are offered the chance to go shopping in a separate room I set up for them. It’s done this way so they are free to ask any questions they may have privately. Some women will just yell out their questions during the party while others would prefer to discuss them with me and get recommendations later.
4. Do women tell each other about things that work for them and/or their spouses? Things like, “Oooohh, this one works wonders for us…” Can you give me an example?
Oh yes! The great thing about Pure Romance parties are that they are for women only. What makes this so wonderful is that women are much more likely to allow themselves to loosen up and have fun. Men will sometimes feel the need to show-off for the other guys by acting more…well, like guys. Some may say things about how if he was doing it right she might not need the arousal cream or who needs a toy like that. It can be intimidating to women or make them feel embarrassed. But if there are just a group of women there, they will let it all out! They tell each other everything and often find out that it’s not unusual at all when everyone else yells out, “Me too!” Be prepared to know way more about your girlfriend than you ever needed to know!
5. What is the funniest thing about a party that you remember?
It seems like something happens or is said at every party, so I had a hard time narrowing it down. A couple of moments that came to mind was the time that I hit a lady in the side of the head rather hard with Mr. Dependable, a rather impressive product of ours, as I was talking. After all this time, I tend to forget that I’ve got a dildo in my hand and get to gesturing too much with it. I also had a dog once that grabbed my double-header toy and tried to run off with it while we were playing pass the penis, a game similar to hot potato where you pass a toy between your legs without touching it. Or the grandmother of about 70 who told everyone she and her husband had designed a love swing made with chains and material a long time ago and how she wished they’d thought to sell them.
