To My Girlfriends – A Note of Perspective and History
With Gratitude and Awe
When we are sitting writing and reading our articles and posts and commenting;
When we are deciding what career paths to take or if to stay at home with the kids or head off to work;
When we are discussing what works in our marriages and what doesn’t;
When we are debating whether or not we want to stay in our marriages or sleep with our spouses because we are mad at them or not;
When we consider the choices our children (both boys AND girls) have, in terms of schools and careers and after school activities and before school activities;
Consider this fact -
Never in the history of humankind have women (and most men) had the number of options and the freedoms that we have today. Never. Ever.
Now think about that. Never in history have we had the choices we do today. Never.
I try to explain this to my children. They need to understand how blessed I am to have been born in the country I was during the time that I was. The freedoms that we have are unfathomable to a woman born 100 years ago, let alone 1,000 year ago. And it is also unfathomable to many in the world – even today.
And for that, as I am debating everything from anonymity to relationship advice to personal hygiene, I am, in the back of my mind, constantly grateful and in awe that we have the luxury of such debates.

Yes, we do need to thank those that went before us who paved the way for this option rich life we have.
Beautifully said.
Excellent post. Imagine living in a time when women were “property” of their husbands or fathers, when the only “career choice” women had was to get married and have children or be a teacher or a nun. Imagine not being able to vote, to have a voice.
I am forever grateful for the activists and the quiet movers who came before me, who cleared the path for me and for my daughter.
Dear Barnmaven,
Yes, thank you for that thought. The concept of being property and all that goes with it (from what to do and when to do it – from the home to the bedroom) alone is such a foreign thought to me. Wow! We are blessed.

And we should encourage our daughters, granddaughters, neices, sisters, all of our young female friends, loved ones and aquaintances to USE the resources and options and freedoms that we women now have. There are so many more than even I had a mere 50 + years ago! Please, listen to your elders and take advantage!
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
Great information! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks!
You know, I have never thought about that. That fact is amazing. I must teach my daughter this.
This is so true. We take it for granted sometimes, but I am eternally grateful that my daughter will live in a society that is progressive and finally accepting that women are equals.
Great info! Thank you for this read
