Locks on Doors

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Ever walk in on your parents when they were busy (yes, THAT kind of busy)?

Have your kids ever done this to you?

If you answered yes to either one of those questions, I’m thinking TRAUMA! For you, for them, and for everyone involved.

Kids and Privacy

Today we consider how to avoid this trauma.  We discuss lock on doors, otherwise known as “the gift that keeps on giving.” Chalk this discussion up to the girls’ trip.

So, you teach your kids to knock on the door, right?  WRONG!  Not only do you have to teach them to knock on the door, but to wait until you give them the all clear.  Otherwise, they may have the horrifying experience of seeing something that will come up in therapy years later.

Be smart.  If you don’t have a door that locks, you may want to invest in this gift that keeps on giving.

And as a backup plan, don’t forget to teach your kids to knock and WAIT for an all clear before they barge happily into your room.

Any pointers you care to share on this one?

Two words: baby monitor. It’s like an early warning system for child intrusion. It has saved us many times.

A friend once told me that the best sex aid you could buy is Vaseline (petroleum jelly). The idea is to smear it on the door knob so the kids can’t turn it….

Thank goodness for not being on either end of that experience. Though I have had to remind my (not so baby) brother that sharing is *not* caring when it comes to knowledge akin to the horrible experience. Also, this same rule should apply to siblings. Privacy is paramount -wish I had realised it earlier so I could have avoided that which cannot be unseen!!

If you own the home, put a lock on your door. If you don’t own, an easy solution is a portable door lock. We carry one when we travel! ( http://www.defensedevices.com/dolopo.html )
