Creating Traditions

Homework Assignment #2 -

Creating Your Own Family Rituals

A month ago, we began a new series of assignments designed to help improve your relationship. The goal is for them to be simple and NOT onerous.  The first one received great feedback!  Our second installment is geared towards the holidays.

Consider creating your own family traditions. This is NOT your traditions or your others, but something that combines the best of what you both want. These will be the basis for your joint history not to mention your kids’ memories. So, you could say that this is pretty important.

When creating your own family rituals, your connection grows.  What holds you together grows stronger.  You have more to laugh at.

How do you start? Ask each other what you want in this holiday and what’s important to you. Really figure out what memories you each associate with the holiday in question. What do you remember from your childhood?

Next, brainstorm. Ask each other what you want your kids to remember.  Then once all of your ideas are on paper, try to make something that makes sense from it all. Prioritize.  Add some creativity.  And see what you come up with together.

So, get started.  Talk about how you want the holiday to work.

Share any interesting traditions that work for you.  We could all learn from this.
